Online people are fond of creating multiple pseudonyms to multiply their denials and spins.

Oh yes. This has been a standard usenet tactic since at least the early
90's when I started regularly using newsgroups, and before that bulletin
board systems.

If you don't have enough, or any, supporters, make some up! This was
absolutely rife during the height of certain flame wars / cross-post
invasions and all that stuffin the mid-90's, we called the false
personas "sock puppets". I have no doubt it's still standard today.

The part that amuses me is that all these people who have only become
old enough to join in the conversation more recently, think that they
invented all these tricks. Somehow they're unaware or unwilling to admit
that it's all been done literally decades before. Trolling is certainly
nothing new, but neither are trolling tactics.
